Mexico launches a tourism recovery plan
The
Mexico Tourism Board has announced an investment plan to rebuild
confidence in travel to the country.
New plans will
protect the tourism industry and those employed within it, maintain air
connections and reposition Mexico as a popular tourist destination.
1,200 million Mexican pesos has been set aside by the
Treasury and Mexico Tourism Board for this investment plan. President Felipe Calderón said: "The recovery plan is the start of the campaign to encourage travellers to come to Mexico."
President
Calderón confirmed that the government is looking at ways to reduce
taxes in the tourism sector and to cover the losses suffered by the
tourism sector over a three month period.
A 50 per cent reduction in cruise taxes is also under consideration. Other plans include a financing program to help small and medium sized companies in the tourism and aviation sector.
Rodolfo Elizondo
Torres, secretary of tourism in Mexico, confirmed the recovery plan will encompass a
national and international PR strategy campaign. Mr Torres said: "We are concentrating our resources in three main areas in order to respond effectively to all our audiences.
"We
are therefore working closely with foreign governments and
international organisations; our investors and commercial partners in
all sectors; and the travel industry - tour operators, hotels, travel
agencies, airlines, and the press and consumer."
The campaign will be coordinated by the Mexico Tourism Board, many new campaigns can be seen across the US and Canada in colorful and informative ads and websites.

President Calderon voiced strong support for Huatulco
President Calderón at Ceremony of “Rebirth of a Great Destination." 2008 Speech in Huatulco

"I would like to say hello to all those here at this ceremony for the
Rebirth of Huatulco, who include investors, social and business leaders
of this locality, of this beautiful locality, with its nine bays, sites
with historical monuments, enviable coasts and balmy climate. I know
that Huatulco has everything required to attract national and
international tourism."
So the first aim of this Renaissance of Huatulco is to expand the
range of choices for tourists. And I am delighted that through the
commitment of public and private sectors we are working for this
destination, and what I have instructed the Secretary of Tourism is to
ensure that by the end of this Government, in 2012, there are at least
2,500 new rooms here in Huatulco. And I am glad to hear that there are
commitments to build over a thousand rooms, construction of which will
begin this year, which I am very pleased about. That brings us to the
goal of this entire administration and I think that if we do things
properly, which we in Federal Government will do, we will be able to
achieve much more.
It is a road link that will enable tourists to reach Huatulco in
less than three hours and will also permit the development of a tourist
corridor between Huatulco and Puerto Escondido, Mazunte and other
beaches and localities that will enable a tourist development to be
built here in a clean, orderly fashion, rather like the Riviera Maya.
